Siemens Limited Nigeria (SLN) has signed a 2.9 billion naira ($18 million) contract with Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria (SPDC) for the Supply of four Siemens Gas & Export Centrifugal Compressors to be used for Shell’s Southern Swamp Associated Gas Project.
Nigeria, which is rated the second-worst gas flaring country in the world, with 1.5bcf/d volume of gas flared in 2010, will experience a reduction in associated gas (AG) flaring with the execution of the project which is due for 2014.
The reduction will save Nigeria an estimated $2.5 billion which it loses to non-optimal exploitation of the gaseous by-product of oil exploration due to capacity underdevelopment. Also the reduction of the flaring which contributes 40 percent of Africa’s largest oil producer’s emissions would result in a greener Nigeria.
Siemens a global brand dedicated to environmental sustainability signed the Shell contract following the Nigerian Content Certification it received recently from Nigerian Content and Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB).
The Nigerian Content certification is a policy of the Federal Government to develop the capacity of its oil and gas sector through the facilitation of adequate participation of indigenous companies and local experts in the bid process for government contracts.
