In California, gasoline prices are among the highest ever for a Labor
Day weekend, according to a new survey by AAA. The average price of
gasoline in California is now $4.15 a gallon for regular.
There's more pain at the pump this weekend for drivers like P.J Kappel of Sacramento.
"That's why I'm staying home," Kappel told KCRA 3.
Kappel knows it's cheaper to stay home then hit the road, especially after he paid nearly $84 to fill up his Land Rover.
"Look at this thing," Kappel said. "It's like 12 miles to the gallon. And times are tough so I'm staying local."
The high price of gasoline is driving customers away from Dylan Rozhon's windshield repair business.
That big spike started August 6, at the Chevron refinery in Richmond.
Since that time, gas prices have jumped about 34 cents a gallon in
California, according to AAA.
That's why Lauri Russi decided to stay close to home this holiday weekend.
"We did not want to leave Sacramento today with the price of gas. It's crazy out there," Russi said.
For many boaters, higher gasoline prices will not get in the way of fishing for salmon.
"It comes with the territory," said Don Zick. "You want to go fishing? You got to buy the gas," he told KCRA 3.
"It's a little bit of an expensive hobby," said Soda Sanouvong, who was also fishing for salmon along the Sacramento River.
"But it's something you love to do and you got to do it," Sanouvong said.
Some beat the high price of gasoline by using peddle power -- on a bicycle.
"It's more about exercise for me, " said David Panelli. "Then I can eat
whatever I want for the rest of the day," the bicyclist told KCRA 3.
