Ophir Energy, a London listed Energy firm has made yet another gas discovery with Fortuna West-1 well, off Equatorial Guinea, on Block R.

Ophir noted that it had encountered a 72 metre gas bearing column from the Fortuna West-1 well, which was said to have contained  60 metres net pay in the primary target late Miocene sands of the western lobe of the Fortuna complex.

Communications between Fortuna west-1 and the earlier Fortuna-1 and Fortuna East-1 discoveries were indicated by pressure measurements, which however confirmed the aggregate gas column in the Fortuna complex to 101 metre.

Pre-drill estimate of about 299 billion cubic feet of gas made, Fortuna West-1 was above it, with a well defining 297 Bcf of additional gross mean recoverable resources for the complexes Western lobe, it also intersected an interpreted 37 metre gas column in the underlying mid-Miocene Viscata prospect, containing a total of 11 metres net pay with an average porosity of 30% within excellent quality reservoir.

Stating that the newly discovered column is consistent with a common gas-water contact within the Fortuna-1 and Fortuna East-1 wells, based on recent results from Fortuna West-1, the total estimate Viscata  prospect was likely to hold is 618 Bcf of gross mean recoverable resources.

Ophir's Chief executive, Nick Cooper however said that, the success of Fortuna West-1 across multiple targets improves their overall knowledge and understanding of the Fortuna complex and Viscata Channel Levee complex within Block R, adding that the well discovered over 1 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas which has in turn significantly derisked other exploration target within the block.

Ophir's estimate of contingent resources has thus been increased from 697 Bcf to 3 Tcf of gas this year as a result of the discovery of Fortuna West-1 well on Block R.
