The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, said the country plans to ameliorate its electricity fluctuations and establish itself as a net exporter of power to its neighboring countries, Biu hydroelectric scheme which is expected to produce about 300 MW and the Jubilee Field gas project which is expected to produce additional 600 MW are part to the plans formed to achieve the set goal.
Stating that the country's parliament passed a renewable energy bill that would empower the government in eliminating the use of paraffin for lighting, also to develop solar energy as an alternate source of electricity generation.
Paraffin light in urban areas are however being converted to solar power, which has been ascertained to be less expensive and lasts longer on power outages, development of various projects in the country will enable the country become self sufficient and an exporter of energy in the nearest future, but it still depends on the West African Gas Pipeline company.
When the Tarkoradi gas plant begins operation, Ghana plans to start exporting gas to Benin in addition to its current supply of electricity to the said country, following the cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in September.
