Officials of the Petroleum Tankers Drivers (PTD) under the aegis of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) collaborated with one of the nation's leading petroleum marketers NIPCO plc, to step up their social responsibilities with awareness campaign for truck drivers on the recently promulgated Lagos Traffic Law aimed at instilling sanity on the road.
The event which took place at NIPCO's company premises with the theme 'Promoting Safety on Wheels by Drivers' was attended by more than 200 fuel transporters. It was flagged off by the Managing Director of NIPCO, Mr. Venkataraman Venkatapathy whom was represented by the company's Administration Manager, Mr Bonaventure Edie.
Also in attendance were the officials of the public education unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Lagos State Ministry of Transport, Alausa, Ikeja.
Declaring the event open, the NIPCO boss said the primary aim of the campaign was to improve the afety awareness instincts of the drivers, in this case the tanker drivers through whose efforts petroleum products are conveyed across the country.
With technical support of key government agencies the safety initiative aimed at increasing sanity on the road, it is also keeping in line with United Nations decade of action on road safety by reducing road traffic crashes and fatality by the year 2020.
Representing the Lagos state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Kayode Opeifa, Mrs Habibat Basiru counsel drivers on the imperatives of the new traffic law and advised them not to see it as punitive but as clarion call for all road users to adhere to a more safety conscious way of life.
Representing the FRSC, Mr. Ozekhome Julius, said campaigns such as this are very essential especiallly at this ember period when vehicular movement are very high with its attendant effects.
He further said the commission will continue to partner with organizations on safety of the road in order to bring mishaps to the barest minimum.
